At Ports America, the Assistant Operations Manager is part of the front-line management team and will effectively direct, plan and supervise the duties associated with terminal operations and staff. This includes ensuring efficient, safe, and productive operations for assigned customers, terminal area, and cargo type.

The Assistant Operations Manager is responsible for participating in the development and achievement of operational and financial goals and objectives and incorporating Ports America Values of Safety, Integrity, Pursue Excellence, Create Happiness, Connect and One Team in all aspects of communication, behavior, and business dealings.

Essential Duties:

  • Effectively manage the work activities of the Foreman, Labor, and other personnel; ensuring performance expectations and customer needs are met.
  • Determine the amount of labor needed for each day and ensure labor is order appropriately for your assigned area.
  • Make decisions affecting overtime cost and general expenditures and ensure they are made in the best interests of our company and customers.
  • Determine additional staffing / labor needs and contact appropriate representative in advance, ensuring cost-effective staffing and availability.
  • Ensure payroll accuracy and make appropriate changes as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with the company’s Safety program.
  • Ensure all labor and staff comply with accident prevention / safety and workers' compensation programs and procedures.
  • Work closely with M&R/Terminal Departments to ensure the appropriate equipment allocation meets operational demands.
  • Maintain positive relations with Labor and ensure that the Collective Bargaining Agreements are understood and adhered to.
  • Ensure that performance issues of employees under his/her supervision are addressed, and corrective action/discipline is imposed when circumstances warrant.
  • Advise leadership of labor matters and assist in adjudicating all complaints filed including grievances.
  • Participate in regular training and feed-back to labor and management staff.
  • Communicate areas of accountability and performance expectations to labor and management staff.
  • Develop, communicate, maintain, and improve operating and administrative procedures (consistent with area procedures and objectives) designed to provide required information and facilitate internal practices.
  • Ensure certifications and required training and clearances are current for you and your staff.
  • Ensure that all company policies, procedures, and controls are followed and that required reports are completed accurately, submitted on time to appropriate staff, customers and other designated personnel, and that appropriate staff and labor have a full understanding of these procedures.
  • Work a flexible schedule of hours, days, nights, weekends, and holidays as directed by business need.
  • Travel to support other operations as needed.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in any discipline
    • Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
  • Experience with Computerized Operating Systems
  • Obtain a TWIC Card issued by the Department of Homeland Security
  • Valid US Driver’s License

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of safety and accident prevention codes and regulations
  • Knowledge and understanding of cargo stowage and stability Proficient in MS Office
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Ability to manage time efficiently.
  • Ability to execute in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to plan and organize to ensure efficient execution of plan.
  • Ability to drive and influence the performance of others.
  • Ability to make sound decisions and respond quickly to operational issues.

 

Physical Working Attributes:

  • Climb up and down a ladder on a vessel multiple-times within a shift
  • Work on ships and terminal with engined equipment
  • Work in changing hot and cold climates based on weather conditions.
  • Work in an environment that may be hazardous to persons unable to see and hear fast moving equipment.
  • Lift, push, and or pull up to 30lbs.
