This is the 2024 fellowship description for this mentor organization.

The National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU) represents federal employees from 35 different government agencies and departments. Our mission: to help create workplaces where every federal employee is treated with dignity and respect. Over the years, we have done this by advocating for fair pay and benefits, negotiating for telework and alternative work schedules, securing back pay for workers who were improperly paid, expanding federal employees' political rights, and much more.

The DC Field Office advises local union representatives on collective bargaining agreement interpretation and negotiations, labor and employment law, and strategies for organizing and membership engagement. The Peggy Browning Fellow will assist the attorneys by researching and advising on a wide variety of issues. The PBF will have the opportunity to participate in collective bargaining sessions, and possibly arbitration or EEO hearings.  Past NTEU Peggy Browning Fellows have:

  • Assisted with arbitration hearings, including drafting post-hearing briefs, and questioning witnesses;
  • Participated in collective bargaining agreement negotiations;
  • Researched and prepared memoranda to prepare for arbitrations and/or EEOC hearings;
  • Shadowed attorneys on depositions;

The stipend for this ten-week fellowship will be $20/hour for incoming 2Ls and $22/hour for incoming 3Ls, paid via regular payroll. Students typically work 35 to 40 hours per week.
