The International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers ("SMART") is a non­profit, unincorporated labor organization, and is the largest railroad operating union in North America. Widely recognized as the leader among transportation labor unions, the Transportation Division of SMART ("SMART-TD"), sets the pace in national and state legislative activity, collective bargaining, and efforts to improve safety and working conditions in the rail, bus, transit, and airline industries.

SMART was formed following the merger of the former Sheet Metal Workers' International Association and the United Transportation Union in 2011. SMART-TD is a division within SMART that handles the representation functions of the former United Transportation Union, representing workers in the railroad, bus, and airline sectors, and is the largest railroad union in North America.

Working directly with our attorneys in Independence, Ohio, the Peggy Browning Fellow will be exposed to a wide range of legal issues and matters, and actively participate in various facets of the judicial, administrative, and legislative process. Specific duties may include researching labor and employment issues; reviewing discovery documents; preparing complaints and statement of facts; assisting with motion and trial prep; communicating with court personnel, opposing counsel, and various Union officers and members; and drafting motions and supporting legal memoranda.

Fellows will work directly with our staff consisting of three attorneys, assisting on a wide range of matters and will be provided feedback and the opportunity for hands-on experience in all aspects of labor litigation.

Commitment to the labor movement is a must. 2L students local to the area or willing to relocate also required, as the successful candidate who demonstrates the requisite skill will have the opportunity to continue employment through the school year and obtain full-time employment as an attorney in our office in 2024 following graduation.

The total ten-week stipend for this fellowship will be $7,500, and fellows should expect to work 40-hours per week. This position is in-person.
