Construction Coordinator I - Natural Gas

Orbital Engineering, Inc. is currently seeking a Construction Coordinator I to support our Natural Gas Distribution group in our Hammond, IN office. The Construction Coordinator I role is an entry-level position responsible for assisting with the planning, coordination, and oversight of small-scale natural gas construction projects. This position ensures safety, regulatory compliance, and efficiency while supporting construction teams and clients.

Responsibilities:

Construction Planning and Coordination:

  • Assist in planning, scheduling, and organizing small-scale construction projects, including pipeline replacements, main extensions, and utility installations.
  • Participate in pre-construction walk-throughs to review design drawings, permits, and material readiness.
  • Verify that all required permits and safety/environmental plans are in place before construction begins.

Field Oversight and Support:

  • Monitor construction activities to ensure compliance with safety standards, project specifications, and environmental regulations.
  • Communicate regularly with construction crews, client project managers, and engineering staff to resolve issues and support project progress.
  • Support the documentation of redlines, safety audits, scope changes, utility locates, and crew timesheets.

Compliance and Safety:

  • Ensure adherence to federal, state, and local regulations, including:
    • 49 CFR Part 192: Federal pipeline safety standards.
    • OSHA safety regulations.
  • Assist with safety oversight and reporting during construction. Stop unsafe activities and escalate concerns as needed.

Material and Equipment Coordination:

  • Track construction materials and rental equipment needs.
  • Coordinate field deliveries and assist in managing material shortages or inventory adjustments.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Prepare Daily Log Reports that track construction activities, deficiencies, safety incidents, and project milestones.
  • Maintain field records, inspection reports, and schedule adherence documentation.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• 1+ years of experience in construction or utility operations.
• Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).

• This position requires the ability to pass a post-offer drug (including marijuana) and alcohol test in compliance with Federal regulations and is also subject to random testing as a condition of continued employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management or related field.
• Experience with natural gas transmission or distribution preferred.
• OSHA 10-hour training or equivalent.
• Familiarity with construction materials and inspection practices.
• Strong communication, organization, and field coordination skills.

Level of Experience (Typical):

• Entry-level position for individuals with 1–3 years of related experience.
• Exposure to utility or gas construction environments is beneficial.

Work Environment:

• Field-based with some office responsibilities.
• Exposure to outdoor conditions and potential hazards on active construction sites.
• Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required.
