O'Neal Steel currently has an opening for a Assistant Controller at our Corporate office in Birmingham, AL.

Responsible for the general accounting and accounts payable functions of the company. This position will manage the preparation of accurate and timely monthly financial statements, quarterly financial package, reconciliations, both internal and external audits, and other accounting work product by performing duties personally and through others in the department. This position will also ensure the timely entry of invoices into our ERP system, monitoring timely payments to vendors, review of vendor statements, and other accounts payable monitoring duties personally and through others in the department. This position will assist with continuous improvement efforts throughout the company.

In this role you will:

  • Accounting for operating and financing leases, hedges, insurance, accruals, allocations and various other accounts.
  • Coordinates monthly or annual closing workflow with applicable departments.
  • Supervises the maintenance and transaction activity of accurate and proper general ledgers.
  • Assists in preparation and distribution of financial statements and various regulatory and bank reporting.
  • Responsible for reconciliation and review of assigned general ledger
  • Prepares schedules and supporting documentation for internal and external auditors.
  • Supervises vendor payments process to ensure timely and accurate payment to vendors.
  • Liaison between Accounting Dept., Payroll, Tax, Operations, Human Resources, Information Technology and other departments.
  • Participates in the development of company accounting policy and administers approved accounting procedures.
  • Supervises and participates in continuous improvement efforts.

  • Assists Controller with interpretation and implementation of applicable financial
  • Responsible for providing error-free work to all internal and external customers as related to the output of their position.
  • Manage a team of direct reports, including:
    • Conducting performance and salary reviews on a timely
    • Supervising, developing, and training accounting and accounts payable department

What you will bring:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting Finance, or a related field; CPA certification preferred.
  • 5+ years of relevant accounting experience, including experience in a supervisory or leadership role.
  • Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Proficiency in financial software and tools (e.g., ERP systems, Excel, etc.).
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy.
  • Drive for continuous improvement.
  • Ability to work with other teams throughout the organization.
  • Excellent leadership and team building skills.
  • JD Edwards/One World preferred.
