Post Doctoral Research Associate - Haptics software
Position Number:24-004
College or Other:College of Engineering and Technology
Department:Electrical & Computer Engineering
FT/PT Status:Full Time

Summary The ODU Research Foundation is seeking a Post Doctoral Research Associate for Phase I STTR in collaboration with the Haptx company, which will design a new pair of haptic gloves with actuation pads concentrated on the fingertips. The postdoctoral researcher will be responsible for writing software to convert lexical content to Braille streaming to these fingertips, in a manner that emulates physical reading of Braille. In addition the researcher will also exploit deep neural network-based semantic segmentation, found in open source, which runs on the fly and is then converted to a bas-relief of different actuation levels, enabling the visually impaired to feel the content of a digital image. We will start with a visualization of actuation pads, then eventually transition to the gloves themselves once Haptx releases the prototype to us. Candidate may also take part in validation at Georgia Tech.  Job Responsibilities:
  • Requirements analysis. Survey of open-source software tools.
  • Software implementation based on either Python or C++.
  • Interaction with Haptx and PI Audette.
  • Publication of results. High-impact publications are a must, since we need them to obtain phase II funding.
  • Other duties as assigned.
