Summary
This position is a strategically critical role in a fast-growing global public company, reporting into the corporate function. Novanta is a highly acquisitive company, completing more than 20 acquisitions over the last ten years. The role has visibility into the executive leadership team, including CEO and CFO, and the company’s board of directors, including audit committee. The role reports to the Senior Vice President of Tax, and the ideal candidate will be a successor for this person.
Primary Responsibilities
This role is primarily responsible for managing a team that performs all aspects of the Company’s income tax provision and oversees the Company’s global income tax compliance. In addition, this role will assist in creating, planning, and implementing a cohesive tax strategy for Novanta.
- Leadership over the tax team in completing the global ASC 740 income tax provision from process planning and managing workload through execution and SEC reporting.
- Oversee communications with external auditors on external financial statements, tax/accounting issues, and company decisions on accounting disclosures.
- Regularly participate in Audit Committee and Senior Management meetings.
- Ensure effective internal controls are maintained and documented to pass Sarbanes-Oxley Section 404 key controls testing.
- Develop tax policies and prepare technical tax accounting memos documenting accounting treatment, processes, and procedures.
- Manage tax team and relationships with outsource external tax advisors to ensure timely and efficient completion of all income tax-related reporting.
- Lead tax team’s efforts on enterprise-wide systems project such as SAP upgrades, and drive tax team standardization and full adoption of tax technology tools such as OTP and Alteryx.
- Lead and manage delivery of high value add projects including R&D credits (R&D) to drive reductions in cash taxes and rate.
- Lead and support corporate tax planning initiatives. Liaison with accounting, financial planning, and other company functions and serve as a partner to departmental and company leadership on critical tax considerations.
- Consult with Corporate Development teams as the global tax matters point of contact for mergers and acquisitions. Provide tax technical guidance on structuring, due diligence, contract review, modelling, and execution of transactions.
- Monitor tax legislation and changes in tax laws to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations. Research, assess and document federal and state tax issues. Provide guidance on proposed and enacted tax legislation, keep abreast of tax law changes to manage risk, and identify potential planning opportunities.
- Build, develop and lead a team, including mentoring, training & development of technical and core finance skills, setting strategy and monitoring progress towards goals.
Required Experience, Education, Skills and Competencies
- Minimum of 15+ years of progressive experience, including public accounting and multinational corporate experience. Master’s degree and CPA preferred.
- Solid ASC 740 tax provision experience with in-depth knowledge of technical accounting and SEC reporting regulations.
- Experience managing both insourced and outsourced corporate income tax compliance for multi-national and multi-state filings.
- Self-starter with the demonstrated ability to work and drive process improvement in a fast-paced complex environment with minimal supervision.
- Strong analytical skills and agility with excellent written, verbal, and strong people skills.
- Demonstrated capability to define, build and lead a diversified team of professionals.
- Experience with OneSource Tax Provision (OTP) or similar tax accounting software preferred.
- Experience with SAP and Oracle ERPs and HFM/Oracle Consolidations a plus.
