Minimum Qualifications

Required educational background:

  • High School Diploma
  • Certified North Carolina Firefighter
  • Certified North Carolina Emergency Medical Technician

Required kind and number years of work experience:

  • Minimum five (5) years experience in the Fire Rescue field.
  • Minimum five (5) years experience in delivery of certification courses.

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Presentation and demonstration skills
  • Knowledge of NFPA and OSHA standards and regulations
  • Multi-Task
  • Respect diversity
  • Adapt to changing procedures, protocols, or assignments
  • Create and maintain a learner centered environment

Required license or certificate: 

  • Valid North Carolina Driver’s License
  • Qualified Firefighter 1&2 Instructor
  • Proctor Credential

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ten (10) years experience in the Fire Rescue field
  • Current American Heart Association Instructor
  • Additional Fire Instructor Qualifications such as Emergency Vehicle Driver, Hazmat, Live Fire, etc.

This Coordinator will provide the vision and leadership required to support and enhance the mission of the Fire Academy program. The Coordinator’s primary administrative responsibilities include program development/management, continuous review, planning, budget administration, general effectiveness of the program, accreditation, and providing supervision and mentoring to part-time faculty. Instructional responsibilities require a broad-based knowledge of the Fire Service field of study at the local, state and national levels. The Coordinator of the Fire Academy at Central Carolina Community College will be responsible for supporting student success by creating an optimum learning environment, responding to student needs, managing effective instructional activities, developing curriculum courses, modeling employability skills, demonstrating professionalism, developing cooperative work relationships with other faculty and staff, supporting college administrative requirements, and maintaining competency in their instructional field.  He/she will be responsible for quality instruction and for effective participation and interest in the total affairs of the college. The Fire Academy Coordinator reports directly to the Public Safety Fire Rescue Coordinator, with oversight from the Dean of Public Safety.

This position may have occasional travel between campuses and for training. Occasional after hours may be required.

Essential Duties

  • Assist in the planning, developing, coordinating, and delivering of Office of the State Fire Marshal certification courses within the Fire Program parameters.
  • Effectively communicate with students, potential students, staff, and coverage agencies.
  • Inventory, maintenance, and asset management of Central Carolina Community College owned fire apparatus and equipment.
  • Maintain academy records.
  • Keeps abreast of advancements and best practices in the fire service.
  • Assist with research and purchase of equipment, as needed. 
  • Assist with the management of training supplies, ascertain the need for, and request as mandated by the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
  • Attend meetings and trainings, as necessary, to stay up to date on pertinent information within the Fire Program at the college level as well as at the state level.
  • Maintain strong emphasis on health and safety throughout training activities.
  • Maintain safe operation and instruction of the training ground. 
  • Utilize written and oral communications skills when completing job functions.
  • Highly organized, self-motivated, and strong attention to detail. 
  • Provide administrative support to the Fire Rescue Coordinator as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
