Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing from a nationally accredited institution – required.
- Master of Science in Nursing within three years of hire – required.
- Current unrestricted license as a registered nurse in North Carolina – required.
- Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) – current certification or obtain within one year of hire – required.
- Current Basic Life Support Credential (CPR) – required.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS
- Three years’ clinical experience in acute patient care and/or medical-surgical nursing and/or emergency or trauma condition - required.
- Complete preparation in teaching and learning principles for adult education (including curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation) within three years - required.
- Meet minimum national accreditation standards (SACSCOC) and minimum criteria of other relevant accrediting, licensing, and credentialing agencies in the area of teaching assignment – required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must be able to lift, carry, push, and/or pull up to 25 pounds.
- Frequent standing, walking, stooping, and bending required.
- Is able to hear audible equipment indicators and verbal communications in the environment.
- Occasionally required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
- Work environment can be stressful at times in dealing with a wide variety of challenges and deadlines.
- Occasional (or regular) evening or weekend work may be required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior college-level teaching experience – preferred.
- Previous experience as a nurse educator – preferred.
- Instructor in BLS – preferred.
- Experience in simulation-based education and training, evaluation of outcomes, patient safety, and implementation of innovative simulation-based education and training programs – preferred.
Position Description
SUMMARY

The Clinical Lab and Simulation Educator supports the mission, purpose, and goals of the College and will work collaboratively with the leadership, faculty, and staff across the institution to ensure evidence-based clinical standards and simulation best practices are reflected in all simulation activities.
Coordinate and manage the College’s skills lab and simulation center within the healthcare programs of study. Assure the effective and efficient operation of the lab, assess and provide for meeting program and student needs, and oversee the operation of high and medium-fidelity technology to ensure safe and effective use of the simulation equipment. Requires community training using mobile simulation equipment for the College’s healthcare practice partners.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide curricular and assessment guidance for educational activities related to simulation. This includes collaboration with faculty to design, implement, facilitate, and debrief manikin-based, standardized patient, virtual simulation, and clinical anatomy programming.
- Provide instruction and debriefing in an inter-professional environment that serves many clinical disciplines, including (but not limited to) nursing, emergency medical science, nurse aide, medical assisting, phlebotomy, pharmacy technology, surgical technology, and respiratory therapy.
- Design healthcare simulation-based learning using International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL) standards of best practice and assessment activities that meet specific department, course, and healthcare partner outcomes.
- Collaborate with faculty, department, and academic leadership to develop, plan, and implement simulation experiences in accordance with best practices in simulation education and in alignment with curricular goals.
- Implement, facilitate, and debrief simulation-based learning and assessment activities as assigned including manikin-based, multi-manikin sessions, multi-station task training, standardized patient, and virtual patient modalities.
- In collaboration with Institutional Effectiveness, develop and administer evaluations of simulation experiences and continually monitor for improvement.
- Identify opportunities for improvement, innovation, and the development of initiatives for the integration of simulation in clinical education and curriculum.
- Advise department, program faculty, and stakeholders in simulation methodology, technology, and best practices with a focus on standardization and efficiencies across the healthcare continuum.
- Adjust content and teaching strategies appropriate for the learners’ needs.
- Coordinate the assessment of student learning activities to maximize the potential for students to meet prescribed outcomes.
- Assist in the quality assurance of all evaluation tools.
- Identify grant opportunities and coordinate the collection of data for ongoing research or grant requirements.
- Create and implement orientation for new faculty, including pre-briefing, simulation, and debriefing.
- Mentor faculty in the designing and implementation of simulations so that faculty will be able to run the simulations and debrief successfully.
- Provide professional development opportunities related to simulation best practices.
- Develop, implement, and monitor lab budgets, policies and procedures to guide and support the programs. Orders and maintains inventory of lab supplies and instructional materials.
- Coordinate and participate in community events showcasing health and human services.
- Participate in faculty and department meetings to assist with development and implementation of simulation experiences.
- Schedule and train standardized patients.
- Maintain currency in simulation education through the review of relevant journals, abstracts, and scientific literature in existing and emerging simulation technologies, including underlying educational principles.
- Network with other lab and simulation educators at local, state, and national levels to develop and utilize best practices.
- Participate in annual faculty evaluation process, providing feedback to program leaders.
- Provide an elevated level of service to customers by establishing and maintaining effective working relationships and partnerships. Accept responsibility for managing situations and problems. Utilize independent judgment in problem-solving of complex issues. Work cooperatively with team members and colleagues, contributing positively and constructively to the achievement of team and College objectives. Adhere to the College’s policies, procedures, and other established guidelines, including the North Carolina Community College System and accrediting agencies.
