Description

SUMMARY

Sets up and operates steel processing machines to cut and process coils of metal by performing the following duties.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Other duties may be assigned)

  • Reads work order carefully to determine dimensions of sheets to be cut.
  • Inserts shaft into core of roll and raises and positions roll.
  • Threads ends of material through feed rollers, under or across cutting blades, and aligns material against machine guides.
  • Starts machine and verifies size of cut material.
  • Consults with Director of Metal Processing or Steel Center Manager prior to cutting questionable material.
  • Reports damaged or defective material to the Steel Center Manager or Production Coordinator immediately.
  • Communicates with Crane Operator and other coil line workers to minimize downtime and maximize processing efficiencies.
  • Readjusts machine to ensure specified dimension of sheet.
  • Observes operations of machine to detect malfunctions.
  • Stops machine to make required adjustments.
  • Performs preventative maintenance procedures, as required.
  • Observes all company safety practices, procedures and PPE requirements.

Position Level

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Machine Operator 1

·       Basic understanding cut-to-length machines and/or slitter.

·       Able to operate at least one line.

·       Able to safely operate a forklift to move materials to and from working areas.

·       Able to follow QA guidelines and change out/coil change requirements.

·       Able to perform machine pre-checks on one line.

Machine Operator 2

All of Machine Operator 1 Understanding, plus:

·       Uses crane and/or forklifts to load machines.

·       Basic understanding and able to operate least two machines.

·       Able to follow QA guidelines and change out/coil change requirements on at least two machines.

·       Able to perform machine pre-checks on at least two lines.

Machine Operator 3

All of Machine Operator 2 Understanding, plus:

·       Advanced understanding of all machine operations.

·       Able to troubleshoot machine failures on all production lines.

·       Able to follow QA guidelines and change out/coil change requirements on all lines.

·       Frequently uses crane and forklifts to load & unload machines and transport throughout the warehouse.

·       Advanced understanding of all steel center machine operations.

·       Able to troubleshoot and perform regular maintenance on area machines.

Machine Operator Lead

All of Machine Operator 1-3 Understanding, plus:

·       Strong understanding of all machines and associated required maintenance.

·       Supervision not required while completing orders.

·       Proficient computer skills and understanding of Real Steal.

·       Able to perform routine troubleshooting, maintenance, and calibration on machines (i.e. hydraulic hoses, adjust parameters, replace broken/missing parts, etc.).

·       Demonstrates leadership/training capabilities.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

None required.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

CERTIFICATION, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

None required.

SKILLS/ABILITIES

  • Attention to detail.
  • Good communications skills.
  • Ability to read and understand technical documents, service manuals, safety rules, and maintenance instructions.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. 
  • Basic computer proficiency.
  • Basic math skills. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • General knowledge of crane operation preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work involves standing and walking most of the day. Work normally requires finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination to operate machines.  The employee frequently is required to talk or hear.  Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and distance vision.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes of airborne particles.  The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. The warehouse space is not climate controlled.
