Description
SUMMARY
Sets up and operates steel processing machines to cut and process coils of metal by performing the following duties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Other duties may be assigned)
- Reads work order carefully to determine dimensions of sheets to be cut.
- Inserts shaft into core of roll and raises and positions roll.
- Threads ends of material through feed rollers, under or across cutting blades, and aligns material against machine guides.
- Starts machine and verifies size of cut material.
- Consults with Director of Metal Processing or Steel Center Manager prior to cutting questionable material.
- Reports damaged or defective material to the Steel Center Manager or Production Coordinator immediately.
- Communicates with Crane Operator and other coil line workers to minimize downtime and maximize processing efficiencies.
- Readjusts machine to ensure specified dimension of sheet.
- Observes operations of machine to detect malfunctions.
- Stops machine to make required adjustments.
- Performs preventative maintenance procedures, as required.
- Observes all company safety practices, procedures and PPE requirements.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
None required.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
CERTIFICATION, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
None required.
SKILLS/ABILITIES
- Attention to detail.
- Good communications skills.
- Ability to read and understand technical documents, service manuals, safety rules, and maintenance instructions.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.
- Basic computer proficiency.
- Basic math skills. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- General knowledge of crane operation preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work involves standing and walking most of the day. Work normally requires finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination to operate machines. The employee frequently is required to talk or hear. Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and distance vision.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes of airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. The warehouse space is not climate controlled.
