The Brunot Island Generating Station comprises two main units. The first, Brunot Island CT1A, powered by a GE Frame 5N, is an 18 MW fuel-oil fired generator. The second unit, Brunot Island CC, boasts a 3x1 Combined Cycle configuration with a GE Frame 7B and GE STG, providing a substantial 243 MW of power, making it a crucial asset to the region's energy infrastructure.
Opportunity Summary
Under general supervision, the Power Plant Technician / Chemist (PPTC) controls the physical plant equipment and oversees electricity generation using Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Gage Board, Switches, or other controls within the control room. The PPTC maintains constant communication with plant personnel and Load Dispatchers, assuming a situational leadership role to ensure safe, compliant, and efficient facility operation. Additionally, the PPTC manages the equipment clearance program (lockout tag out) process and oversees safety activities as necessary. This role is multidisciplinary and cross-functional, allowing the PPTC to perform chemistry, maintenance, electrical work, or other tasks within their capabilities.
Perform duties such as but not limited to:
- Perform all assignments safely, participate in creating a safe work environment within the workplace by engaging in safety training, and support continuous improvement.
- Ensure environmental compliance within the context of operating the facility.
- Direct plant personnel in the operation and control of the facility and the work of others assigned to assist.
- Maintain proper boiler chemistry by monitoring and operating the boiler within accepted procedures.
- Operate plant equipment needed to perform job duties including vehicles, cranes, hoists, etc. Read and interpret blueprints, wiring and schematic diagrams, and perform switching and tagging, mechanical, and electrical tasks.
- Direct and/or perform duties associated with testing, troubleshooting, monitoring, and operating all power plant equipment, including switching and breaker change-out.
- Understand and perform water and chemistry treatments, conduct basic water testing, set up and collect water samples, oil samples, and associated data as required.
- Provide training to other employees.
- Directly manage assigned projects as required.
- Perform routine record-keeping work including station logs, time reports, material usage, shift logs, etc.
- Perform housekeeping duties in general plant areas as well as specifically assigned equipment/areas.
- Collaborate closely with other departments in developing process procedures, water utilization, treatment, compliance, and waste disposal.
- Perform sampling duties, including collecting water and oil samples, conducting equipment monitoring, data analysis, water chemistry analysis, handling chemicals, preparing reports, and maintaining/calibrating related monitoring and test equipment.
- Monitor compliance with environmental regulations and promote a safe and healthy environment for employees, other companies, and the community. Take prompt action to correct deficiencies affecting the environment.
- Collaborate with plant operations in the area of boiler chemistry, ensuring proper chemical application to maintain plant processes within established guidelines.
- Maintain records of analytical results, chemical usage, environmental regulatory sample logs, and all other necessary records.
- Direct, train, and supervise assigned employees, providing technical direction in support of specialized activities such as boiler cleaning, system flushes, and equipment installation.
- Assist in investigating and diagnosing power plant performance deficiencies such as chemical utilization, boiler and turbine deposits, cathodic protection, etc.

The Power Plant Technician / Chemist reports to the Plant Manager.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing, and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g., hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves, and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.
Fitness for Duty
All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening.
Work Schedule
This position requires working a Monday to Friday 8-hour day shift, with occasional afternoon, midnight, and weekend shifts scheduled throughout the year. Position also requires extended working hours and varied shifts with weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload, and plant conditions.
Compensation
Initial compensation starts at $44.40 per hour, with increases based on progression through qualifications.
Job Qualifications
- Satisfactorily pass a written test as agreed upon between the Company and Union.
- Two years of formal education in the field of chemistry or equivalent work experience.
- Competent in water and chemistry treatments, conducting water testing, and collecting samples for analysis. Proficient in maintaining and calibrating monitoring and test equipment.
- Skilled in operating various plant equipment, including vehicles, cranes, hoists, and control systems such as DCS and Gage Board.
- Capable of interpreting blueprints, wiring diagrams, and schematic diagrams for effective equipment operation.
- Proficient in conducting switching and tagging procedures, as well as performing mechanical and electrical tasks.
- Experienced in testing, troubleshooting, monitoring, and operating power plant equipment.
- Must possess and demonstrate good written and oral communication skills as well as the ability to work well with others.
- Must maintain all regulatory required licenses as applicable at Company’s expense.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Drivers License at all times.
