This fulltime position must be flexible to work 8-hour shifts between the hours of 9:00am - 2:30am

The Meritus Special Police Officer (SPO) assists with day to day operations of the Security Department; conducts preliminary inquiries and investigations; prepares written reports; assists Meritus personnel, patients, guests and visitors. Maintains a constant state of alert for safety and security breaches. Patrols the facility and off-site locations of the facility to ensure the safety and security of our staff, patients, visitors and guests and the protection of company assets. Enforces Maryland State and local laws and ordinances as permitted by law, along with Meritus Health safety and security policies and procedures during assigned shifts.

Education - Basic professional knowledge; equivalent to a Bachelor's degree; working knowledge of theory and practice within a specialized field.

Experience - Requires at least three (3) years of previous law enforcement experience within at least the past 5 years. Non-SPO experience required such as Military Police, State, City or Federal Law Enforcement.

Licensure/Certification - Possession of a valid driver's license required.  International Association of Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) Basic Certification preferred.BLS (CPR) in compliance with policy required. Must comply with Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act (LEOSA) and maintain proper firearms certification and identification.  Ability to obtain and maintain special police office (SPO) Certification within 3 months from date of hire and obtain appointment within 6 months from date of hire, which is to be renewed every three (3) years.   Be able to demonstrate competent and safe weapon handling, which is to be renewed every (1) year.  Be able to obtain and maintain a handgun permit, within 6 months from date of hire, which is to be renewed every three (3) years.Be able to obtain and maintain Taser Certification within 6 months from date of hire, which is to be renewed every (1) year.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities - Operational knowledge of, walk through and hand-held metal detectors; Ability to recognize and diffuse difficult situations by taking appropriate action promptly; Ability to accept direction from multiple leadership levels; Ability to work varying shifts including weekends; Ability to be professional, courteous, and tactful with law enforcement officials, staff, patients, and visitors and willingness to assist the public and co-workers as needed. Must be able to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and maintain confidentiality of highly sensitive and confidential information.

Ability to pass a vigorous background check, including professional references (must have separated from their place of employment in law enforcement in good standing); Ability to perform all essential functions of this position; Knowledge of access control system and CCTV system; Ability to communicate both professionally and tactfully both verbally, in writing, and in presentations; Must have working knowledge of administrative procedures and system and be able to work as a member of a team. Have knowledge of and follows Standard Work/Standard Operating Procedures relative to emergency or unusual incidents. Uses good judgment and maintains composure under pressure. Have considerable knowledge of state and local criminal laws.

For use of Meritus Vehicles: Valid Driver’s License, A driving record as required by law for vehicle expected to operate. No record of moving violations in the past three years is preferred. Certified copy of driving record is required to be provided by team member annually on date of birth. Acknowledgement with signature to “Attestation A” of Meritus Vehicle Management Use and Control policy.
