Job Description:

Maryland Environmental Service has an opening for an experienced Mechanic (Senior Mechanic, Lead Mechanic, or Senior Lead Mechanic in the Environmental Dredging and Restoration Group located at the Poplar Island facility on the Chesapeake Bay near Tilghman, MD in Talbot County. Responsibilities include installation, repair, and maintenance of mechanical equipment, including heavy equipment, pumps, crew boats, and vehicles, as needed. May require the ability to work overtime, evenings, weekends, and during adverse weather conditions. Position requires riding to and from site on a crew boat. Salary will be commensurate with experience.

Estimated Pay Range:

Senior Mechanic: $50,601.10 to $69,577.03

Lead Mechanic: $55,661.62 to $76,534.73

Senior Lead Mechanic: $61,228.06 to $84,188.41

Minimum Requirements:

Required qualifications for all classifications include graduation from a standard high school or possession of GED equivalency certificate. Additional experience required for each classification is:

  • Senior Mechanic: five (5) years of experience performing installation, repair, and maintenance of mechanical equipment.

  • Lead Mechanic: seven (7) years of experience performing installation, repair, and maintenance of mechanical equipment.

  • Senior Lead Mechanic: eight (8) years of experience performing installation, repair, and maintenance of mechanical equipment.

Formal schooling from an accredited vocational school with a major in a related field may be substituted for experience. Education experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for up to three years of the required experience. Must have a valid driver’s license with less than 5 points, the ability to lift 50lbs, and the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Experience preferred but not required: maintenance of pontoon equipment, large pumps, bulldozers, excavators, articulated dump trucks, water trucks, fuel trucks, boats, and light trucks. Knowledge of computers and maintenance tracking software.

Senior Lead Mechanic: May require management of supervisory and non-supervisory Mechanic positions. May include responsibilities for overall direction, coordination and evaluation of managed staff, interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, delegating, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; and addressing complaints and resolving problems.
