Responsibilities:
- Follow instructions from foremen and supervisors to ensure tasks are completed efficiently.
- Keep the job site clean and well-organized.
- Handle the loading and unloading of materials, tools, and equipment.
- Ensure you pay attention to detail and follow safety standards.
- Fuel and wash department vehicles.
- Gain essential excavation skills to progress within the department.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to interact with crew, leadership, and clients.
- Understand grade elevations and utilize basic layout techniques
Requirements:
- Ability to hand dig with shovels, picks, digging bars to expose and locate utilities and complete trenches
- Assist with digging, trenching, and backfilling operations
- Understand and utilize Basic verbal and hand signals to applicable equipment in use
- Mechanically inclined Proficient with common hand tools (tape measure, power drills, levels, screwdrivers, etc.).
- 5+ years underground construction experience
- Ability to work effectively with all personality types.
- Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions.
- Self-directed and can work independently
- Valid driver’s license.
Preferred Requirements:
- Knowledge of the procedure of removal and installation of underground utilities and line openings
- Trenching & excavation - shoring, sloping, shielding
- Laser level/transit setup
- Lockout tagout
- Blueprint reading
- Confined space entrant certified
- HAZWOPER certified
- Respirator fit certified
Equipment experience:
- Basic operation of trucks & equipment, including utilize pick-up to pull a trailer
- Trailer loading and securing of material & equipment
- Forklift Operation - Material Handling up to 5000#
- Aerial -lift operation - boom lift preferred
- Aerial -lift operation - scissor lift preferred
- Telehandler preferred
- Backhoe – excavation & grading preferred
- Loader – material handling preferred
- Excavator – excavation & grading preferred
- Chauffeur LIC/Med DOT Physical preferred and will assist in obtaining
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to ascend and descend ladders, scaffolds, stairs and work in confined spaces and in proximity to loud equipment.
- Must be able to position one-self to work in confined spaces such as trenches, pits, manholes, attics and tunnels.
- Must be able to lift and carry or otherwise move up to 50 pounds regularly/occasionally
- Must be able to respond quickly to auditory alarms, visual signals, or other effective means to communicate hazards
- Must be able to move safely over uneven terrain or in confined spaces.
- Must be able to work in cold/hot environments.
- Must be able to traverse irregular and steep terrain.
