Job Description
The Opportunity
Under the supervision of the Houston Regional Superintendent, the Regional Deputy Superintendent of Schools (DSOS) will be involved in supporting the day-to-day KIPP Texas- Houston schools’ academic performance and functions that lead to the overall success of supporting further growth in the region—the Regional DSOS will partner with the Regional Superintendent and organizational leaders to improve results and execute KIPP Texas-Houston next growth plan. The Regional DSOS will assist the Regional Superintendent in providing leadership in the development of best-in-class curriculum instruction and evaluation programs. The Regional DSOS will lead sustainable schools capable of producing consistent, lasting, and high-quality results for all students. The Regional DSOS serves in both a leadership and management role and is responsible for managing and leading the members of their Regional School Management Teams (SMTs) in its strategic priorities, decisions, and work. The Regional DSOS must ensure the Regional SMT strategic work maximizes its value to the Team and Family and is aligned with the KIPP Texas- Houston vision, mission, and core values.

- You partner with the Houston Regional Superintendent and the School Support Partners Team to meet all operational, financial, and other non-academic goals, ensuring a sustainable organization at all levels;
- You partner with the Regional Superintendent to unify staff and create a stronger adult culture with a focus on retaining strong talent across all levels of the organization;
- You develop and support direct reports and leadership in schools in key areas, including instructional coaching and content expertise;
- You assist in creating and executing KIPP Texas multi-year Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion roadmap that moves us along on the anti-racism framework
Key Responsibilities
The Regional Deputy Superintendent of Schools is responsible for assisting Houston Regional Superintendent in the overall school quality, academic performance, strategic growth, and organizational culture of their region. As the region grows in size and complexity, the Regional Deputy Superintendent of Schools will work closely with Houston Regional Superintendent, and schools’ instructional and operational leaders to ensure that the overall strategy is ambitious, comprehensive, actionable and that it continuously leads to innovation and measurable student achievement. See specific responsibilities below:
Building Leadership and Accountability.
- Be a cultural leader who will mentor and develop leaders;
- Foster and establish effective relationships with the staff, students, parents, and peers;
- Build a network of peers, educational leaders, and academic institutions to share ideas, resources, and best practices;
- Communicate effectively with the Regional Superintendent and other stakeholders regarding progress toward Regional goals;
- Articulate the desired organizational culture and provide evidence of success;
- Provide leadership for assessing and developing processes to improve schools climate and health;
- Develop a positive environment and institute processes for ongoing collaboration and reflective practices for all stakeholders;
- Service as acting Regional Superintendent in the absence of the Regional Superintendent as requested by the Regional Superintendent.
Driving instructional quality across all the schools.
- Support the execution of regional academic initiatives;
- Work with regional leaders to implement academic strategies, all aspects of the talent strategies, and support regional leaders to implement their school priorities in alignment with KIPP Texas' vision, mission, and strategic plan
- Regularly observe in schools with instructional leaders and regional leadership to effectively drive evidence-based instructional coaching and development;
- Analyze instructional and classroom culture data and create action plans that promote positive learning environments for student academic engagement and achievement ;
- Hold leaders and teachers accountable for ensuring all students have equitable access to the resources and education they deserve.
Building and managing a high-performing team that is able to support schools in their commitment to deliver transformational educational outcomes for students.
- Continue to build and nurture a strong, cohesive culture across schools;
- Serve as a thought partner to direct reports as they lead their respective teams; coaches and supports direct reports to address their key roles and responsibilities;
- Enhance and support strong and consistent accountability systems to ensure regional progress toward shared goals.
- Promote transparent decision-making processes and embrace distributive leadership principles;
- Ensure that School Leader Managers (SLMs) and School Leaders (SLs) have a clear plan for improvement of instruction and school culture;
- Engage School Leader Managers and School Leaders in weekly academic program analysis and progress monitoring;
- Build coalitions, relationships, and partnerships with key stakeholders in support of the organization’s mission and goals;
- Develop a leadership pipeline through strong coaching and development practices for Heads of Schools, School Leaders, and Assistant School Leaders.
Educational Equity
- Remain informed on educational trends and research findings impacting practices that ensure educational equity for all students ;
- Keep abreast of changes and developments in education and uses this knowledge constructively in the operation of educational services
Qualifications
Skills and Qualifications
- A passion for KIPP Texas' beliefs, mission, vision, values, and operating norms and a commitment to living them every day
- A track record of leadership, including at least 8-10 years of professional experience with successfully managing a complex, high-performing, organization, division, or project. Specific experience in a multi-site, high-growth environment is preferred
- An ability to drive transformational change for students by fostering and leveraging synergy among teams and approaching leadership with openness and humility
- Demonstrated skills in instructional leadership
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to quickly build relationships, directly manage people, manage a budget, and solve issues in a complex and decentralized environment
- Energetic, self-starter attitude, comfortable working in an environment characterized by its fast pace and entrepreneurial spirit
- Excellent at crises management
- Must be flexible and customer-focused
- Excellent attention to detail and a high level of accuracy required
- Bilingual (Spanish-English), a plus
Education and Knowledge:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution is required
- A Master's degree, with a specialization in Education or Business Administration, is preferred
- 5+ years of teaching experience
- 5+ years of experience as a Principal
- 8+ years of senior leadership experience, preferably in education, CMO environment, business, operations, school office management, or related field. If professional expertise is not in education, the candidate must have other experiences to make decisions with the best interests of students in mind.
- Superintendent certification is a plus
