Job Description

Position Overview
Direct and manage the overall program of extracurricular and intramural athletics for the KIPP Nashville network of 8, soon to be 10 schools. Work to provide all of our K-12 students with the opportunity to participate in an extracurricular athletic activity and ensure compliance with all state, Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA), Middle School Athletic Association (MSAA) and local requirements.

Key Responsibilities:
Responsibilities of the Director of Student Athletics include, but are not limited to:

Program Planning

  • Direct and manage KIPP Nashville schools’ athletic program and facilities in partnership with each school’s Director of Operations.
  • Establish physical and academic eligibility requirements for participation in each sport, and verify each athlete’s eligibility.
  • Provides visionary leadership, strategic planning, and policy development for KIPP Nashville’s athletic programs.
  • Obtain and use evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to gauge athletic program effectiveness and ensure that program renewal is continuous and responsive to student needs.
  • Plan necessary time, resources, and materials to support accomplishment of department goals.
  • Manage athletics budget to maximize funds
  • Build partnerships with community organizations to ensure strong family engagement and connection to community resources
  • Ensures compliance with all School, district, state, and national policies, rules and regulations.

Athletic Events

  • Prepare and approve all interscholastic game schedules.
  • Arrange transportation, lodging, and meals for out-of-town athletic events.
  • Manage district athletic operations by directing ticket sales, employing game officials, and ensuring preparation of facilities.
  • Oversee process of cleaning, repairing, and storing all athletic equipment.
  • Coordinate the use of all athletic facilities by non-school groups.
  • Plan, organize, and supervise all athletic awards programs.

Student Management

  • Implement regional student management policies, communicate expected student behavior related to athletics, and ensure enforcement of student discipline in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
  • Establish and maintain open lines of communication by conducting conferences on vital issues with parents, students, and teachers.
  • Partner with student recruitment 

Coaching and Development

  • Prepare, review, and revise job descriptions for the athletic department.
  • Support the recruitment, selection, training, and supervision of all athletic department personnel and make sound recommendations about personnel placement, assignments, retention, discipline, and dismissal.
  • Evaluate job performance of employees to ensure effectiveness.
  • Develop training options and/or improvement plans for employees to ensure exemplary operation in the area of athletics.
  • Train school based staff members engaged in the planning and execution of athletic programs

Training and Compliance

  • Plan and lead leader, coach, and other involved staff members professional development to launch shared vision and build tools for schools

Qualifications

Desired Qualifications:

  • Must have an active CDL license OR ability to obtain one within 6 months of employment
  • Experience as an Athletic Director across multiple grade levels and sports with a track record of success
  • Experience as a athlete/in an athletics department as well as demonstrated ability to achieve exemplary culture and results in a team setting
  • Minimum of 2 years in a K-12 school setting, including the management and/or coaching of adults 
  • Model of the values of Growth, Shine and Team while demonstrating impeccable personal integrity 
  • Strong project management skills, organizational skills, and attention to detail
  • Excellent communicator, who can build partnerships quickly with internal and external stakeholders
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in education and/or athletics preferred
  • Ability to manage an irregular work schedule, that includes nights, weekends, and travel

Additional Information

Our comprehensive compensation package includes life insurance and long-term disability coverage provided by KIPP Nashville, voluntary medical and dental plans, in addition to retirement benefits and an annual salary increase. To establish equitable salary practices, the compensation package is derived from the regional KIPP Nashville Public Schools pay scale. This position is exempt and will follow a 12-month schedule.
