Position summary: JMT is currently initiating a search for a Traffic Design Engineer for our Newark, Delaware office. The Newark office is in a convenient location and easy to access from not just within Delaware but also from the neighboring states of Pennsylvania, Maryland, and New Jersey. The Traffic Design Engineer will be involved in projects with our Transportation Team and be a part of a fast-growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges.

Responsible for engineering design using knowledge of general engineering principles and practices to interpret, organize, execute, and coordinate assignments. Tasks may include performing capacity analyses, reviewing permitting, and assisting with the design, concept development, and traffic signal design and timing. Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Perform traffic engineering design including signing and pavement marking, traffic signals, signal timing directive, lighting, maintenance of traffic, detours and traffic control and ITS devices
  • Perform traffic safety and traffic analysis studies based on the Highway Capacity Manual
  • Perform traffic analysis using software such as Synchro and HCS
  • Perform various traffic engineering studies such as determining the need for traffic signals
  • Prepare maintenance of traffic (MOT), detour plans, and transportation management plans (TMP) for design projects
  • Assist with field work as needed, including data collection and reviews of traffic operations
  • Review maps, drawings, prepare aerial mapping and other geologic data to plan projects
  • Design projects in accordance with client specifications and guidelines
  • Develop construction cost estimates
  • Assist in the preparation of engineering documents for advertisement and construction
  • Coordinate with internal team members to ensure project completion by the defined deadline and established quality

Required Skills

  • Ability to work in a dynamic and fast-paced team environment
  • Working knowledge in Microstation, and/or AutoCAD
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products (Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Possess critical thinking skills necessary to plan, conceptualize, and anticipate next steps
  • Ability to work effectively on a team, as well as working independently
  • Interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Written and oral communication skills

Required Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in civil Engineering or related course work in Traffic or Transportation Engineering
  • EIT certificate or ability to obtain within 1 year of hire
  • 0 - 3 years of related experience outside of coursework

Working Conditions  

Work is performed within a general office environment 95% of the time. Work is generally sedentary in nature but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment.

Field work is required on occasions where work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Some lifting (up to 25lbs) may be required as needed.
