Position Summary:  JMT is currently seeking an Experienced Licensed Land Surveyor / Surveying Manager. This position plans, organizes and directs work of other surveyors and technicians engaged in surveying the earth's surface to determine precise location and measurements of points, elevations, lines, areas, and contours for construction, mapmaking, utility locations, subsurface utility engineering (SUE), land division, titles, or other purposes. Promotes safe work practices of all survey staff. Evaluates progress of the staff and results obtained and recommends major changes to achieve overall results. Represents the company in meetings and conferences with clients and potential clients.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Assumes supervisory responsibility and performs as staff advisor and consultant for surveying functions and personnel management
  • Coordinates findings with work of engineering, right-of-way, and/or utility coordination personnel, clients, and others concerned with a project
  • Will determine scope of work, job objectives, and man-hour budgets on projects assigned to the surveying group in concurrence with other project managers and supervisors
  • Maintains liaison with individuals and units within or outside the organization with responsibility for acting independently on technical matters
  • Researches previous survey evidence, maps, deeds, physical evidence, and other records to obtain data needed for surveys
  • Makes decisions independently on surveying problems and methods and represents the organization in conferences and meetings to resolve important questions, and to plan and coordinate work
  • Plans and develops surveying projects concerned with unique or controversial problems which have an important effect on firm's major projects
  • Analyze survey objectives and specifications to prepare survey proposals or to direct others in survey proposal preparation
  • Schedules, assigns and directs projects concerning surveying within the firm
  • Prepare or supervise preparation of all data, charts, plots, maps, records, and documents related to surveys
  • Train assistants and helpers and direct their work in such activities as performing surveys or drafting maps
  • Develop criteria for survey methods and procedures

  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Required Skills

  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others using the spoken word
  • Ability to communicate in writing clearly and concisely

Required Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree (four-year college or technical school) preferred, Field of Study: Land Surveying, Civil Engineering or similar degree type
  • 5 plus years of experience in Land Surveying and/or Professional Licensure
  • Professional License as Land Surveyor in Kentucky or the ability to obtain a Kentucky license; NCEES Certification preferred
  • Experience using Trimble Instruments, MicroStation, AutoCAD, Carlson, Microsoft Office suite
  • Experience with KYDOT Route Surveying is preferred

Working Conditions

Work is performed within a general office environment 80% of the time. Work is generally sedentary in nature, but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment.

Field work is required on occasion where work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Some lifting (up to 25 lbs) may be required as needed. Amount of Travel Required: 20% approximately
