Position summary:  Responsible for providing field and office support for migratory fish studies, natural resource investigations, and environmental permitting in South Carolina. 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Field identification of South Carolina freshwater fishes
  • Ability to work in hot or cold field conditions for up to 10 hours per day
  • Coordinate with agency and local governmental staff
  • Assist with delineation of wetlands according to USACE Regional Supplements
  • Assist with preparation of Jurisdictional Determination Packages for submittal to USACE
  • Provide input on solutions to problems using basic scientific knowledge and principals
  • Evaluate equipment and material
  • Maintain accurate and current project documentation

Nonessential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Required Experience

  • Full-time, undergraduate student in natural resources, environmental science, marine science, biology or similar field

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with SCDOT E-Permitting, Jurisdictional Determination and Mitigation Forecasting Applications
  • Basic knowledge of National Environmental Policy Act documentation
  • Identification of Atlantic Slope estuarine and freshwater fishes
  • Previous internship experience

Working Conditions

Initially, work with be primarily (>90%) field work associated visual monitoring of migratory fish passing through the Columbia Fishway, located at the Columbia Diversion Dam in Columbia, SC.  The Columbia Fishway facility is exposed to ambient weather conditions; thus the candidate should be physically able and willing to work up to 10 continuous hours per day in potentially hot or cold conditions during the spring months (March through May).
