Position Summary: JMT is seeking a creative, highly motivated Senior Transportation Planner to support our growing transportation planning practice in the northeast region. This is a unique opportunity to help deliver innovative transportation plans and solutions for public sector clients across the region. The successful candidate will report for work assignments to our Albany, NY or Syracuse, NY office as their main office, however JMT is flexible and supports work from home options for this position. 

The ideal candidate will have in-depth knowledge and expertise leading active transportation planning and design projects and be skilled many aspects of transportation planning. Candidates must be able to work collaboratively with a multi-disciplined team of planning and engineering professionals. The candidate will work on a variety of multi-modal transportation projects that combine transportation planning, urban planning, traffic engineering, and land use planning.

The annual salary for this position is $75,000.00 - $100,000.00. 

Essential functions and responsibilities

  • Contribute to and manage teams to complete multi-modal transportation planning projects including Feasibility Studies, Master Transportation Plans, Concept Studies, Corridor Plans, Complete Streets Plans, Trail Plans, Grant Applications, PEL studies, SEQR and/or NEPA documents, Technical Reports, and more.
  • Conduct thorough reviews of proposed projects to determine the applicability of SEQR regulations. Advise clients and project teams on the SEQR process and associated requirements.
  • Prepare and present detailed planning studies and reports to government bodies, committees, and the public.
  • Collect and analyze a variety of statistical data and prepares reports and maps on topics such as census information, land use, travel patterns, system performance, and transportation funding. 
  • Coordinate community review and engagement in a variety of transportation plans and projects. 
  • Provide information to the public regarding transportation concepts and alternatives. 
  • Assist in resolving public and stakeholder issues. 
  • Be one of the company’s key contacts with clients and ensuring overall work progress and technical performance on a variety of projects.
  • Lead and leverage mentorship skills to support our emerging talent to grow and develop our planning team. 
  • Support and/or participate in field review and data collection activities.

Required Experience

Bachelor’s degree in transportation planning, urban planning, regional planning, environmental planning or natural science, geography, public policy or administration, landscape architecture, engineering, economics, or other closely related field.

AICP Certification (or ability to obtain certification within the next year). 

Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in a transportation planning.

Demonstrated experience leading transportation planning projects in a supervisory capacity.

In-depth knowledge of New York State SEQR regulations, guidelines, and procedures.

Preferred Experience

  • Master’s degree in planning, environmental or natural science, geography, landscape architecture, engineering, public policy, law, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in GIS software and other relevant planning tools is desirable.
  • Ten (10) or more years of experience working for public sector clients in the northeast region on transportation planning projects at a local or regional scale.
  • Demonstrated engagement in professional organizations. 
  • Experience with complex, multi-disciplinary projects, preparing or directing staff in the preparation of technical studies, Environmental Impact Statements (EISs), NEPA documents, and setting and adhering to project budgets and delivery schedules.

Working Conditions

Work is performed within a general office environment approximately 90% of the time. Office work is generally sedentary in nature but may require occasional standing and walking. Office work is performed with adequate lighting and temperature, with no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. Work sometimes requires availability in the evenings and on weekends to participate in public engagement activities.

Field work is required approximately 10% of the time and is conducted outdoors in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Field work will require walking and carrying field equipment over typical outdoor terrain. Some lifting (up to 25 lbs.) may be required as needed.
