Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Nursing from an accredited program is required. Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing is preferred.
  • Three years previous experience in acute OR setting, with at least 12 months as a Registered Nurse in the Orthopedic specialty area is preferred.
  • A current, valid RN license in state of practice or equivalent per state regulations.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) or obtained within 90 days of hire.
  • Certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or obtained within 90 days of hire.
  • Certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) or obtained within 90 days of hire.

Essential Functions

  • Ensure safe patient care within the peri-op unit.  Ensuring that proper patient identification, time outs, resources, and supplies are available to maintain a safe environment.
  • Serves as a resource to teammates, support services, and physicians; working side by side with scrub to help maintain the sterile field in the operating room.   Ensures that the sterile field is not compromised during the procedure.
  • Promotes/supports growth of others through precepting, mentoring, and orientation when appropriate. Serves as a positive, clinical role model to facilitate staff development, providing pertinent feedback to manager or designee.
  • Keeps the surgical area clean and organized for the scrub and the physician; removes instruments and sponges as they are used during the procedure.
  • Assist in room turnover process and that the surgical room is sterile and safe for the patient. Ensuring that the goals of the unit are met and maintained to provide for better room utilization.
  • Maintains environment and supply inventory, including assuring the procurement of necessary supplies, equipment and expertise, and the timely delivery of needed care, and alerting administration of these needs in a timely manner.
  • Prepares the patient for the procedure and handles the preparation for the operating room including educating the patient before the surgery takes place and participates in patient handoff during times of transition.
  • Is engaged in helping to ensure that OR metrics, process improvement, work processes, providing solutions and actions plans to reach departmental metrics and goals.
  • Assesses the patient’s condition before a surgical procedure and works with a physician to develop the care plan for the patient during the surgery.
  • Assumes other related responsibilities as required and assigned.
