General Summary: The Medical Laboratory Technician is responsible for performing routine and complex medical laboratory tests for diagnosis and treatment of disease, analyzing and assuming accountability for accurate test results, maintenance of complicated instruments, and monitoring quality control and quality assurance programs for any laboratory related processes.

Supervisory Responsibilities: This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

General Requirements: All duties performed will be done accurately and in a timely manner.

  1. Assumes responsibility for maintaining clinical competencies according to Gonzaba Medical Group policy.
  2. Ensures customer service is always maintained at the highest level.
  3. Exercise tact and courtesy when dealing with patients, visitors, providers, and co-workers.
  4. Must always adhere to customer service expectations including in-person and virtual (via telephone, or telehealth applications) communication.
  5. Participates in educational programs as needed.
  6. Maintains strict confidentiality.
  7. Other duties as assigned.

 Essential Job Responsibilities:

  1. Monitor quality control for all laboratory instruments and perform portions of method validation studies.
  2. Independently perform clinical laboratory tasks (testing and documentation)
  3. Responsible for following lab procedures on specimen processing and handling, testing, analyzing, reporting, and maintaining complete and accurate records of all testing performed on-site.
  4. Participates in quality assurance as it pertains to laboratory procedures.
  5. Assists in preparation for inspections by regulatory agencies.
  6. Searching and retrieving documents and samples.
  7. Participates in the evaluation, development, and implementation of new or updated testing procedures and protocols.
  8. Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results.
  9. Take patient vital signs (i.e., temperature, pulse, and blood pressure)
  10. Room and transport patients.
  11. Transports patients safely from the following positions: sitting to standing or laying down, from standing to sitting or lying down, from laying down to standing or sitting, and assist to the bathroom, into/out of wheelchairs, and pushing/pulling patients in wheelchairs.
  12. Assist with training clinical staff on laboratory testing.
  13. Order and maintain laboratory controls, supplies, and equipment.

Education and Training: Minimum high school education or equivalent. An associate degree from an accredited college or university in a specialized area is preferred. Preferred American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) Certified preferred. CPR certification with AED is required and must be kept current.

Experience: Experience in a clinic, laboratory or hospital with a minimum of one-year experience preferred. 

Other Requirements: Computer Skills: Skilled in use of computer/EMR systems. Knowledge of Word processing software, spreadsheet software, Internet, and database software.

Work Environment: Clinic environment. Exposure to communicable diseases, bodily fluids, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a clinic environment.

Mental / Physical Requirements: Requires manual dexterity, sitting, standing, stooping, reaching, kneeling, crouching, bending, walking, lifting up to 40 lbs. without assistance. Close vision and ability to adjust focus. Must be able to work efficiently under pressure.
