Founded in 1890, Glen-Gery Corporation is one of the nation’s largest brick manufacturers and operates nine brick manufacturing facilities and one manufactured stone facility. Glen-Gery products are sold nationally through a network of over 500 distributors as well as in Canada. Since entering the USA in 2018, Brickworks have acquired Sioux City Brick, Redland Brick and the distribution business of Southfield Corporation in Illinois and Indiana (Illinois Brick, Indiana Brick). The combined North American business now has more than 1,000 employees, operates across 40 locations, including 9 brick plants, 1 manufactured stone plant, 26 masonry supply center/retail locations and 3 Design Studios.

Basic Function:

The Corporate Controller will have responsibility to undertake all aspects of financial management, including the accounting for the Glen Gery corporate office and manufacturing plants.  These responsibilities include financial reporting, assisting in budget and forecast preparation.  In addition, the position will be critical in the establishment and application of accounting policies, procedures and principles.  Experience with managing the outsourced tax function (Federal, State, Local) and a history of establishing strong financial controls in a corporate environment are desired.  Experience working in a multinational organization and exposure to IFRS will be beneficial. This position will have 3 direct reports.

Duties:

Planning

  • Key member of the finance leadership team for Glen-Gery Corporation
  • Management and development of the Glen-Gery Corporate Office finance team, including continuously partnering with the Treasury Manager
  • In conjunction with the Director, Corporate Finance, oversight of the Overheads cost centers supporting the preparation of weekly profit estimates, semi-annual profit forecasts, annual budget & strategic plan to Group
  • Manage the CAPEX request and budgeting processes

Financial Reporting

  • Preparation of financial statements in compliance with company guidelines and accounting standards (IFRS)
  • Drive the month-end close process and management reporting obligations to Group office ensuring all necessary close processes are completed and accounts reconciled
  • Drive the half year and year-end financial close and reporting processes, including preparation of the statutory reporting package to Group
  • Manage necessary accruals for the business for key areas such as employee benefits, inventory, income tax, etc.

Risk Management

  • Key point of contact in management of the external audit engagement with 3rd party audit, including driving internal delivery of information to auditors
  • Develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls, including transactional control within the manufacturing plants

Taxation – Income Tax

  • Preparation of tax provision including deferred tax calculations at the half year and year end reporting dates
  • Liaison with 3rd parties (tax advisor and agent) to file income tax (state and federal) returns

Other duties

  • Provide technical accounting support, in conjunction with the International Group Finance Team, to the business, including guidance on changes in accounting standards (IFRS) and assessment of their applicability to the North American business
  • Provide ad-hoc support to the Director, Corporate Finance as may be required

Education and experience requirements

  • BS/BA Degree in Accounting or Finance
  • CPA qualified
  • Relevant experience (10 + years) in a corporate environment
  • BIG 4 or large second tier accounting firm experience preferred
  • Well-developed analytical skills and experience in forecasting, budget preparation, and developing key controls for asset management
  • Proficiency in Excel, Word and PowerPoint
  • Accuracy and attention to detail
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience with a larger ERP solution such as JD Edwards
  • Must be willing to travel up to 5% of time outside of assigned locations
