GAI Consultants is seeking an Engineering Director for our Midwest Infrastructure Business Sector. This position will be part of the Transportation and Infrastructure Business Unit. You will be responsible for leading and overseeing the Business Unit’s bridge design and inspection services in Indiana. These services include the design of bridge replacements, widenings, reconstructions, and rehabilitation projects. Bridge inspection, load rating, construction engineering, and other services are also part of this team. Our clients include the Indiana Department of Transportation, Counties, Cities, Towns, private developers, universities, hospitals, and contractors. This leadership position also participates and engages in strategic discussions, budget preparation, M&A activities, Business Unit goal setting, and other high-level discussions.

Job Duties/Responsibilities:

The Director role is responsible for leading all aspects of the Bridge Team performance including, but not limited to:

  • Delivery of projects on time and providing exceptional client service
    • Interface with customers as necessary to ensure customer needs are met, including providing regular status and progress reports.
    • Provide project experience with all aspects of simple and complex bridge design and plan production including preparation of contract bid documents.
    • Coordinate with Roadway team on bridge approach and maintenance of traffic needs
    • Manage subconsultants as required.
    • Prepare scope and fee proposals.
    • Conduct quality control reviews.
  • Financial performance of projects and the Bridge Team’s overall financial performance
  • Acquisition of work across all markets.
  • Staff management by creating and maintaining a healthy work environment for engaged employees through mentoring, setting staff annual goals and conducting performance and merit reviews.
  • Recruiting, hiring, and mentoring staff.

The Director role will also be responsible for growing our Bridge Services throughout Indiana:

  • Provide experience relevant to obtain INDOT prequalification.
  • Actively engage in an ACEC committee.
  • Represent the firm at conferences, career fairs, public meetings, etc.
  • Maintain industry relationships with both clients and fellow consultants.

The Director will also demonstrate exceptional proficiency in the following job-specific skills:

  • Ability to demonstrate strong writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Technical understanding of natural resources and field assessment methodologies.
  • Read, analyze, and interpret general business documents, technical procedures, and governmental regulations.
  • Familiarity with DOT Consultant Performance Evaluation criteria for bridge design Performance types.
  • Completion or the ability to obtain within six months federal, state and local training as needed to obtain all necessary State DOT bridge design and inspection pre-qualifications.

Specific Job Responsibilities:

  • The Director is responsible for leading staff to complete project deliverables within a given schedule. The Director is responsible for quality assurance and client coordination throughout the project timeline. In many instances, the Director is responsible for leading project managers in achieving project goals. Specific responsibilities include: 
    • Actively manage project scope, schedule, budget and subconsultant performance
    • Achieve project management success by consistently performing under budget, ahead of schedule, and with high evaluations/client satisfaction
    • Lead and mentor project managers in their assigned roles
    • Serve as a company contact and primary client liaison to bring the schedule, budget, and scope of work to completion to the client’s satisfaction
    • Perform technical discipline tasks including preparation of reports, designs, specifications, and plan preparation to ensure cost-effective development of assigned projects
    • Mentor less experienced team members and successfully delegate tasks while providing support as needed for them to become self-sufficient
    • Lead QA/QC process – ensure high quality scores on INDOT evaluations
    • Act as liaison to other Directors for large projects and/or projects requiring staff from multiple disciplines
    • Prepare and review contracts for clients and subconsultants
    • Ensure appropriate staff task delegation and prioritization of project work.
  • The Director is responsible for the financial performance, including meeting revenue and profit goals as assigned. Specific responsibilities include:
    • Plan and track key financial metrics, timesheet review and billing invoices to maximize department profit
    • Develop scope and fee documents for project assignments
    • Complete and review invoices
    • Develop and maintain monthly billing projections
    • Track staff utilization rates
    • Approve overtime and staff PTO while maintaining project deadlines.
  • The Director is responsible for acquisition of new work into the firm. This includes working with Business Development, Marketing staffs, and other firm leadership to harvest client relationships and produce quality proposals to win work. Specific responsibilities include:
    • Participate and conduct business development activities and meetings with clients
    • Assist with preparation and coordination of proposal efforts
    • Develop technical information to be included in proposals
    • Build relationships across the industry to help facilitate teaming opportunities
    • Develop and enhance client relationships

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to hike moderate distances through unimproved terrain, utility rights-of-way, in remote areas, etc.
  • Ability to hear and visualize potential hazards during fieldwork or site visit situations.
  • Wear proper safety gear at all times, per GAI’s and the Client’s safety policy.
