GAI Consultants is seeking an Environmental Compliance Specialist with experience in Field Compliance Monitoring to work out of our various offices within our Energy Business Unit. The successful candidate will serve as a field lead to perform, with minimal supervision, monitoring of erosion and sediment controls on various types of construction Projects; both site based and linear Projects as well as other types of environmental due diligence studies. The successful candidate should enjoy working in a challenging, fast-paced, and team-oriented environment. This position will afford an excellent opportunity for the individual to expand their experience and knowledge base in federal and state environmental regulations and methodologies in Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana with support (as needed) in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and the surrounding regions.
Job Duties:
- Perform field monitoring of erosion and sediment (E&S) controls on various types of construction Projects with minimal supervision, working independently.
- Assist or perform Phase I/II Environmental Site Assessments, brownfield and contaminated site due diligence investigation, waste management, and land acquisition projects.
- Utilize electronic location devices such as a GPS or a GPS enabled device to collect data tied to a Project location.
- Review and understand E&S control and stormwater plans associated with both site and linear construction Projects.
- Prepare periodic monitoring reports based upon field observations. Reports may be submitted via paper report or electronically.
- When required, be able to perform basic calculations and to review specifications, permits, and permit conditions.
- As assigned, be able to assist with preparation of environmental reports or permit applications such as wetland and stream delineation reports, erosion and sediment control plans, and sound studies.
- Adhere to the Health and Safety requirements of GAI Consultants and GAI’s clients.
- Maintain QA/QC standards and adhere to the Quality Management System procedures of GAI Consultants and the quality procedures of GAI’s clients.
- Must be flexible; travel will be expected as part of this position with occasional overnight stays out of town being required.
- Assist with transmission line siting investigations and siting documentation for regulatory review.
- Assist or perform desktop environmental due diligence studies.
- Assist or perform hazardous waste analysis.
- Assist or perform with water and soil sampling.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- BS/MS degree in Biology, Environmental Science, or related field.
- 2-4 years of experience conducting environmental field surveys; electric transmission experience a plus.
- 2-4 years of demonstrated experience in field monitoring. Consideration will be given to candidates that can specifically show E&S control monitoring experience.
- Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local regulations (i.e., NPDES, RCRA, EPCRA, SARA, CERCLA, OSHA, DOT, etc.).
- Knowledge of Section 401/404 permitting, stream and wetland surveys, delineation techniques, and permitting
- Candidate must be proficient in using Microsoft (MS) Word, Excel, and MS Office applications and be familiar with report, database, and form completion through both MS Word applications (e.g. Access, SQL) and online programs.
- Past experience working with an environmental review agency (e.g. state or local conservation district) either for the agency or with the agency as a consultant or owner is a plus.
- Knowledge of National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) regulations and permitting and familiarity with environmental agency E&S control guidelines and best management practice (BMP) designs, construction, and maintenance a plus.
- Certified Erosion, Sediment, & Stormwater Inspector (CESSWI) training a plus.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and technical writing ability.
- Strong work ethic with a desire to learn.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- A valid Driver’s License is required.
Other:
- Ability to hike moderate distances through unimproved terrain, utility rights-of-way, in remote areas, etc.
- Ability to hear and visualize potential hazards during fieldwork or site visit situations.
