The Oncology Nurse Navigator coordinates the care of the cancer patient throughout their cancer experiences. This includes navigating the financial, communication, and psychosocial barriers experienced by patients. The Navigator works collaboratively with physicians, ancillary services, and community agencies. The Navigator is a health educator and is a respected resource in the healthcare community for Cancer issues. The Cancer Patient Navigator supports the Mission of Frederick Memorial Hospital and complies with the hospital’s Code of Conduct.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required:
A. Currently licensed to practice as an RN in the State of Maryland. Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing or actively pursuing is required. Master’s Degree preferred.
B. Must have 3 - 5 years of nursing experience; preferably in an outpatient oncology clinic or hospital setting. Current CPR Certification required. Certification from the Oncology Nursing Society (OCN) required or must be obtained within the first year of employment. Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Certification from ONS is preferred.
C. Strong coordination, organizational skills, and time management capabilities a must. Able to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a busy clinic environment including but not limited to: clinical assessment of patients, assist in all oncology patients through navigation of testing, evaluation process, phone triage, and act as patient resource.
D. Must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills. Must demonstrate the ability to work effectively and maintain working relationships with physicians, professional peers, and support staff. Excellent customer service skills required. Must demonstrate functional computer skills including Meditech, Next Gen, or other physician practice management software, and Microsoft Office.
E. Awareness of the complexities experienced by a patient diagnosed with cancer. Able to assess and care for these patients with respect to cultural, ethical, and religious differences, and physical limitations. In addition to maintaining a high level of confidentiality related to employee and patient information.
