Bureau Description:

The Bureau of Chronic Disease Prevention works to prevent and reduce the impact of chronic diseases and disabling conditions by addressing associated modifiable risk factors. Chronic diseases including heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, and asthma are among the most common, costly, and preventable of all health problems in Florida and in the U.S. The Bureau develops, implements, and evaluates health promotion activities, primary and secondary prevention services, and community-based health interventions across the state. The Bureau partners with state and local agencies, health systems, and community partners to encourage best practices statewide. The Bureau also promotes the inclusion of persons with disabilities in all program activities. The Bureau supports community and state-level partnerships including activities that promote the Department’s Healthy Communities of Florida Program. These partnerships ensure coordination and collaboration among and between stakeholders and providers to stimulate and support efficient and effective delivery of health care.

Your Specific Responsibilities:

This is a responsible professional position under the direct supervision of the Environmental Approaches Section Administrator in the Bureau of Chronic Disease Prevention, Division of Community Health Promotion. This position requires advanced analytical skills involving planning, evaluation, monitoring, and reporting of statewide projects; networking with other program offices and government agencies; excellent communication skills; organizational management skills; and the ability to work with considerable independence. Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Responsible for and serves as the project manager for the Employee Wellness portion of the Preventive Health and Health Services Block Grant including leading and coordinating the Employee Wellness activities of the Florida Department of Health through facilitation of the wellness committee and wellness champions. Promotes and supports employee wellness strategies within the 67 local health offices, school districts, state agencies, and other public and private entities.
  • Facilitates the distribution and analysis of an employee wellness survey and the completion of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Worksite Health Scorecard. Leads the development, preparation, implementation, and evaluation of a comprehensive employee wellness operations plan and communication plan, and prepares internal and external communication messaging, tool kits, and other resources / content related to chronic disease prevention and employee wellness. Facilitates conferences, workshops, events, or other training opportunities.
  • Serves as lead for the Protocol for Assessing Community Excellence-Environmental Health statewide initiative, overseeing activities and offering technical support to county health departments engaged in PACE- EH projects.
  • Assists with development and implementation of grants within the Environmental Approaches Section.  Provides expertise and technical support for the strategies within the grant overall and specifically as it relates to employee wellness.
  • Builds partnerships and facilitates collaboration with and among local health offices, school districts, state agencies and other statewide partners. Facilitates Communities of Practice to enable peer to peer learning and sharing of best practices. 
  • Ensures work products align with the State Health Improvement Plan and the Chronic Disease Prevention Plan to coordinate resources and programs.
  • Participates in the development or analysis of legislative proposals, purchase orders, grant applications, budget requests, and evaluation. 
  • Participates in and attends educational opportunities to further enhance personal and professional development.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned or required by Bureau program activities.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of public health care system, quality management practices, and chronic disease prevention and control.
  • Knowledge of public health programs, management principles, policies, laws, functions, and practices.
  • Ability to develop and write policy, rules, protocols, procedures, manuals, guidelines, grants, and reports.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others and establish effective working relationships with a wide variety of groups.
  • Ability to develop educational materials, and plan and conduct trainings.
  • Utilizes computer or microcomputer to prepare correspondence, reports, and other work.
  • Other Duties as requested.

Qualifications:

Education: Preferred candidate will possess a master’s degree in public health or similar field with at least two or more years of public health experience.
