Nail Cell Operator & Rivet Assembly and Collated Floater - 2nd shift 

Location: Downers Grove                           

Department: Nail Rivet Cell

Hours: 2nd shift: 2:15 PM - 10:45 PM 

Purpose: Perform duties to changeover, set up and operate all rivet assembly machines, collated machines, and nail making machines to produce quality product in accordance with part specification and quality standards in each respective cell.  The Operator will spend approximately 1/3rd of their time in each area, but this will vary based on business needs and priorities. 

Education Requirements:

  • Simple reference use of job orders, part prints, troubleshooting guide, adjustable measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, optical comparators and quality and operation manuals, where interpretation is required.

Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum 1 year manufacturing experience using calipers, micrometers, and guaging.

Physical Requirements:

  • Light physical effort required to handle tools and material, which is equivalent to frequently lifting or moving lightweight material, occasionally, average weights up to 45 lbs. Work involves motions such as bending, carrying, grasping, lifting, reaching, and twisting.
  • Body, eye, hand and finer coordination are required.

Competency Requirements:

  • Changeover, operate all automated rivet assembly machines and related equipment in the cell.
  • Exercise judgment to troubleshoot ordinary operating problems and make corrections, check parts, and record required quality and production information, within the limitations of standard methods and procedures.
  • Perform duties to setup and operate nail making machines to produce nails in accordance with part specifications and quality standards.
  • Exercise judgment to line up nail making machine die sets, align, fit and center with punch to make necessary machine adjustments, complying with instructions and prescribed routines, methods or procedures and involving the making of minor decisions.
  • Mechanical and troubleshooting aptitude.

Rivet Assembly Operator Responsibilities:

  • Work from job orders, part prints, product control and inspection procedures, troubleshooting guide, machine changeover guide, and instructions:
  • Changeover automated assembly machine, add or remove parts to adjust head height, replace blocks, and adjust air pressure in feeder bowl and crimper based on rivet size.
  • Run sample parts, perform pull test procedures, check for proper weight, inspect for defects and proper crimping, and make machine adjustments as necessary to ensure part quality standards are maintained.
  • Monitor machine operation, check parts, and run tests as prescribed.
  • Pack rivets in hoppers, buckets, or boxes and place in carton; place on skid and tag skid or hopper following established procedures.
  • Troubleshoot and repair equipment, clear jams, readjust tracks and timing of feeding tracks, replace defective equipment parts, hoses, and air lines.
  • Maintain production activity records and input finished goods and raw material used totals into the computer system.
  • Lubricate equipment in cell as scheduled or required.
  • Operate bagging machine make necessary machine adjustments.
  • Hand pack rivets, label container, weigh count rivets for proper box quantity.
  • Use pull test machine, weigh scale, continuity tester, pedestal grinder, data entry terminal, computer printer, metal edging machine, micrometer, calipers, hand pallet jack, and hand tools.

Collated Machine Operator Responsibilities:

  • Work from equipment manuals, procedures, prints, and instructions.
  • Setup machine for specific rivet sizes.
  • Set up machine using common hand tools, change tooling, adjust machines, and modify machine settings necessary.
  • Operate equipment, load material, and make operating adjustments when necessary.
  • Responsible for maintaining tooling and spare parts stock and replacements.
  • Check material and inspect finished piece parts.
  • Troubleshoot machine when problems occur and follow previously established procedures for known machine issues.

Nail Cell Operator Responsibilities

  • Work from job orders, prints, production control and inspection procedures, trouble shooting guide, procedure sheets, work orders, equipment manuals, preventive maintenance procedures, samples, instructions, quality procedures, and safety procedures:
  • Set up nail making machine, line up die sets, align and fit in press, center with punch, install cutters, align with dies, and adjust wire feed for proper head size.
  • Check sample parts on all machine new setups, and make necessary adjustments to ensure part specifications are maintained.
  • Monitor machine operations; pull, inspect, and gauge sample parts throughout production run to ensure part quality standards are maintained; make machine adjustments; perform SPC procedures as specified.
  • Troubleshoot, adjust, and perform routine repair of equipment.
  • Maintain production activity records, inspect finished goods and raw material used, and enter data into the computer system as required.
  • Set up and re-feed wire coils and weld in new wire roll ends as required for production.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and adjust ring machine tooling; change ring dies if necessary.
  • Remove scrap and dump in scrap hopper.
  • Maintain corn cob and dump in hopper.
  • Use micrometers, dial indicators, calipers, personal computer, electric welding equipment, hoists, weigh scale, grinder, power pallet jack, hand tools, comparator, vibrating equipment, knurling, and sorting equipment.

General Responsibilities:

  • Perform preventative maintenance per machinery PM sheets.
  • Notify supervisor of unusual material or equipment problems.
  • Use of PPE as required.
  • Follow all written quality and other procedures.
  • Follow safety rules and keep work area in a clean and orderly condition.
