Histologist performs complex histological procedures required for the preparation of patient tissue specimens for microscopic examination and analysis by a Pathologist. Procedures include receiving, mounting, cutting and staining. All procedures conform to regulatory requirements and adhere to all quality control rules, policies and procedures. Histologists are able to identify problems that may adversely affect the diagnosis and reporting of results.

  • Receives and logs surgical and cytological specimens in a safe manner; Investigates issues related to Accessioning and calls for clarification when needed. Notifies Supervisor of unresolved issues
  • Performs and documents preventative maintenance and troubleshooting on all equipment including cleaning in order to maintain high quality laboratory Service.
  • Provides special stains as requested in a timely and quality manner. Accurately maintains adequate records of quality control for staining and equipment maintenance.
  • Maintains organized and complete files of tissue, blocks and slides for ready access. Disposes of wet tissue after two weeks.
  • Prepares cytological specimens for microscopic examination.
  • Accurately embeds, cuts, prepares slides and stains sections of tissue in a safe manner for pathological examination.
  • Helps monitor inventory/supplies and informs Supervisor when ordering is needed.
  • Adheres to the clinical laboratory’s quality control policies in performing, resulting, troubleshooting, and documenting all quality control activities. Issues unable to be resolved are reported promptly to Supervisor, Manager or Director.
  • Provide instruction and training in theory, technical skills, safety protocols, and laboratory procedures to students and employees.
