Sheetmetal Mechanic
Job Summary:
The Sheet Metal Mechanic will plan, lay out, fabricate, assemble, install, and repair sheet metal parts, equipment, and products, utilizing knowledge of working characteristics of metallic and nonmetallic materials, machining, and layout techniques, using hand tools, power tools, machines, and equipment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, or product specifications to determine sequence and methods of fabricating, assembling, and installing sheet metal products.
- Select gauge and type of sheet metal according to product specifications.
- Layout and mark dimensions and reference lines on material applying knowledge of shop mathematics and layout techniques.
- Set up and operate fabricating equipment and hand tools to cut, bend, block and form, or straighten materials.
- Trim, file, grind, buff, and smooth surfaces, using hand tools and portable power tools.
- Weld, solder, bolt, rivet, screw, clip, caulk, or bond component parts to assemble products, using hand tools, power tools, and equipment.
- Install assemblies in supportive framework according to blueprints, using hand tools, power tools, and lifting and handling devices.
- Inspect assemblies and installation for conformance to specifications, using measuring instruments, such as calipers, scales, dial indicators, gauges, and micrometers.
- Fabricate ducts for HVAC systems to ensure maximum efficiency.
- Verify that HVAC systems are designed and installed according to job and/or manufacturer specification.
- Ensure appropriate materials are available to complete the job.
- Inspects work in progress and finished products to ensure work done meets specifications.
- Maintain and update departmental records documenting project activities.
- Fabricate and alter parts using shears, hammers, punchers or drills.
- Maneuver completed units into place and anchor unit as appropriate.
- Assure efficient and economical utilization of materials, improvement of methods, and elimination of wasteful practices within the department.
Qualifications:
High School diploma or equivalent required. Five or more years of sheet metal experience required. Must be able to field measure and field fabricate simple fittings. Must have the ability to measure fittings for shop input. Small hand tools are required.
Language Skills
Must possess good communication skills (verbal and written).
Supervisory Responsibilities
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
Mathematical Skills
Must possess basic math skills. Ability to perform these basic operations using units of American money and weight measurement, and volume.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed and sometimes complex written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving concrete variables in standardized situations.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Valid Driver’s License and meet MVR requirements to operate a company vehicle.
Physical Demands
Must be able to climb ladders, lift and carry 50 or more pounds, distinguish colors for electrical work, use hand tools and tolerate confined spaces. Work will involve heights and seasonal temperature extremes.
