Essential Duties & Responsibilities
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform tasks/acts that are routinely part of any nursing assistant’s job description. Following verification of skills competency to perform specific tasks/acts, the nurse extern shall perform the following tasks/acts as determined by his/her nursing supervisor:
- Provide personal care including bath, shampoo, shave, back rub, position changes, makes beds, prepares patients for meals, feeds patients and passes ice water.
- Answer call lights and bells promptly to determine and meet patient needs.
- Collect specimens, stool, urine, sputum, etc.
- Collect food and hydration input and urine and bowel output and record appropriately.
- Take vital signs.
- Obtain and record pertinent patient information per facility policy.
- Assist with and/or feed patients, provides between meal nourishments, fresh drinking water, and encourage fluids when indicated.
- Assist in progressive ambulation of patients by wheelchair, stretcher, and bed.
- Administer enemas, douches, and document appropriately.
- Apply ace bandages and elastic stockings and sequential compression devices.
- Observe isolation technique and give direct care to patients in isolation.
- Assist in ostomy care and education.
- Apply orthopedic appliances and/or assistive devices as ordered by physician.
- Other tasks as directed by his/her supervising RN.
