We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Sign Language Interpreter to join our team in North Georgia. This position plays a critical role in facilitating communication between deaf or hard-of-hearing students and their educators, peers, and others within the educational environment. The ideal candidate will have proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and a strong understanding of the educational needs of students with hearing impairments.
Responsibilities:
- Provide real-time interpretation and transliteration services using American Sign Language (ASL) and other specialized modes of communication.
- Attend classes, meetings, and events with deaf or hard-of-hearing students to ensure accessible communication.
- Work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, and special education staff to support the educational, social, and emotional needs of students.
- Prepare for specific classroom assignments by understanding the subject material and students' needs.
- Adhere to professional and ethical standards, including confidentiality and impartiality.
- Participate in professional development opportunities to improve skills and stay updated on best practices in educational interpreting.
Requirements
- Associate’s degree or higher in Sign Language Interpretation or related field; a Bachelor’s degree is preferred.
- Certification through the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or equivalent professional certification.
- Demonstrated proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL).
- Experience working as an interpreter in an educational setting is highly desirable.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented educational environment.
- Knowledge of the cultural and linguistic needs of deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals.
- Ability to interpret at varying levels of complexity and adjust language use accordingly.
