Duties and Responsibilities/Essential Functions

The Structural Test Engineer is responsible for the implementation of aerospace structural test plans, procedures, and processes, as well as the execution of testing and data acquisition. In this role, you will act as a Subject Matter Expert within the Cirrus Structural Test Team.

  • Experience with setup, testing, and customization of large structural test stands for aerospace, rail, automotive, marine, or other large testing programs. Aerospace / aviation full-scale structural testing experience is highly desired.
  • Competency in test protocols, builds, evaluation, and testing, as well as in-depth statistical computation and analysis.
  • Direct and perform structural and fatigue testing on composite, metallic, and polymeric test articles, sub-assemblies and assemblies.
  • Execution of conformity documentation and tracking.
  • Support production, quality, sustaining, and field service teams with testing needed for continuous improvement.
  • Follow all safety standards and policies and ensure a safe operating environment, including use of appropriate protective equipment and identification of potential safety concerns.

  • B.S. in Materials Science & Engineering, Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical, or Civil / Structural Engineering from an ABET Accredited University Program.
  • Minimum of 18 years (Sr Principal), 14 years (Principal), 10 years (Senior), or 6 years (Staff) engineering experience. Previous experience with aircraft parts in a hands-on processing or technician role is highly desirable.  New graduates or individuals with less than 6 years test engineering experience are also highly encouraged to apply.
  • Knowledge of structural testing equipment, techniques, data collection and analysis, and statistical evaluation.
  • Self-motivated and driven – individuals in this role must be willing to work with a small core team, but on independent efforts for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment drug screen.

Competencies

To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies: 

  • Engineering skills: Know how to properly size a beam for the required load, knowledge strain gauges, hydraulic systems, actuators, etc.
  • Computer Skills: Experience with test system suites associated with MTS, Instron, or other testing equipment and software is highly desired. Proficient in Microsoft office. Creo, SOLIDWORKS, and / or AutoCAD experience a plus.  Previous experience with programming languages is a plus.
  • Language: Ability to read, write and speak the English language.
  • Quality: High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work productively in a team environment; positive attitude and team spirit.
  • Self-Reliance: Ability to work on major, long-term projects with limited supervision, and direct interaction with all levels of the organization
  • Professionalism: Tactfulness and respect in working with others regardless of their status or position or the urgency of situations; Acceptance of responsibility for own actions; Integrity in following through on commitments.
  • Attendance/Punctuality: Punctuality in arrival times and observance of appropriate break and meal periods; acceptable attendance record and proper utilization of time clocks.
  • Dependability: Responsiveness to management direction, and ability to perform on multiple Project Teams simultaneously; Diligence in completing tasks on time or proposing an alternate plan; openness to additional hours when necessary.
