Position Summary: Under the direction of the Site Director, this position is responsible for developing a classroom atmosphere where children can grow and develop in a safe and positive learning space. The School Age Teacher must be passionate about creating a safe and nurturing environment for children to further their learning experiences during summer camp, select school closure dates, and/or after elementary school hours.

I. Education & Certification Requirements

• School Age Teachers must be at least 19 years of age and at least five years older than the oldest child with whom they work. Candidates must meet 1 of 3 education/experience requirements as listed below:
• Thirty semester hours (or 45 quarter hours) of credit from an accredited college or university with six semester hours (or nine quarter hours) related to school-age childcare, child development, elementary education, physical education, recreation, camping or other related fields. OR
• 1560 clock hours of experience in a recreational program or licensed day care center serving school-age children or a license exempt school-age childcare program operated by a public or private school, and six semester hours (or nine quarter hours) of credit from an accredited college or university related to school-age childcare, child development, elementary education, physical education, recreation, camping or other related fields. OR
• A high school diploma or equivalency certificate plus 3120 clock hours of experience in a recreational program, kindergarten, or licensed day care center serving school-age children or a license exempt school-age childcare program operated by a public or private school.

II. Experience & Training Requirements

• Must be organized and detail oriented.
• Excellent problem-solving skills.
• Must have in-depth knowledge of developmentally appropriate practice for children 5-12 years of age.
• Must exude patience when implementing techniques to support students.
• Knowledge of NAEYC and DCFS licensing standards.
• Must have a basic proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
• Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with others.
• Must be able to maintain confidentiality.
• Required to speak and read English proficiently, bilingual a plus.

III. Desired Outcomes

• Work with direct supervisor on a yearly professional development plan. Identifies own learning needs and takes the steps necessary to develop skills and set challenging goals.
• Fully implements the Reggio Emilia approach to learning with their teaching team focusing on in depth studies and classroom explorations.
• Proven ability to ensure children are actively supervised at all times.
• Proven ongoing adherence to mandated reporter responsibilities to ensure child safety.
• Preparation of thoughtful and engaging lesson plan activity guided by the unique interests of the children enrollment.

• Maintains a learning environment that is organized, clean, and inviting.
• Creates a classroom environment where children are allowed free choice the entire day and are encouraged to explore their environment at their own pace.
• Works well with others, offering help when needed and seeking assistance when necessary.
• Attends and participates in appropriate trainings.
• Notifies supervisor of any problems in a timely manner.
• Responsible for the oversight and supervision of school-age children.
• Leads classroom team in creating an atmosphere in which children can grow and develop; creates a classroom environment that is welcoming and emphasizes the importance of the child; includes furnishings and supplies which are attractive, durable, and developmentally appropriate.
• Supervises and interacts with all children’s activities.
• Assist program leadership in planning fun-filled educational experiences for winter, spring, and summer camp participants.
• Implements effective classroom management strategies.
• Responsible for preparing classroom materials in advance of children’s arrival.
• Assists with responsibility of ordering supplies needed for the program.
• Develops strong partnerships with the families.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
