The Challenge
We are hiring a County Maintenance Engineer to help lead our Division 9 teams, programs, and projects.
In this role, you will:
- Manage, plan, and supervise all road maintenance and force account construction for Stokes County.
- Establish effective working relationships between NCDOT, the public, and local municipalities.
- Supervise and monitor highway maintenance program to ensure efficient and safe use of staff, equipment, and materials.
- Use your professional engineering skills and knowledge to solve difficult highway maintenance problems and accomplish force account construction projects.
- Supervise and evaluate staff performance.
What You Bring
- Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of Civil Engineering and highway maintenance methods/techniques.
- Considerable knowledge of the use and operations of all field and office engineering instruments.
- Ability to understand, explain, and administer contracts, interpret plans, provisions, and specifications.
- Ability to interpret policies, procedures, and regulations and implement them effectively.
- Project management experience leading multiple projects and scheduling/directing multiple work crews.
- Experience using professional engineering skills and knowledge to troubleshoot and solve highway maintenance problems.
- Experience tracking cost expenditures in account systems on multiple large projects.
- Experience leading meetings with staff, citizens ,and public officials to conduct investigations and resolve issues.
- Customer service experience related to resolving problems involving explaining engineering concepts to customer groups.
- Management/Supervisory experience.
- Solid communications skills to effectively communicate and maintain positive working relationships with the public, local governments, and fellow staff.
- Ability to formulate a comprehensive highway maintenance program within the limits of budget and data.
- Can safely operate a motor vehicle.
- Agility to make field investigations on uneven terrain, including steep slopes.
- Able to work in extreme conditions such as ice, snow, dust, extreme heat and cold.

- Safety toe shoes required.
- We may require registration as a professional engineer by the NC Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
Education & Experience
- Bachelors Degree in engineering, and
- 2+ years of relevant experience; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
