We are currently seeking a Director, Healthcare Operations to join our healthcare team in the Southeast. 

Position Summary:

The Director, Healthcare Operations is responsible for managing the Healthcare management team and overseeing the efficient execution of healthcare projects.  The Director will act as an internal advisor to Project Managers and an external resource to clients, architects and contractors.  Coordinating with the Vice President, the Director will assist in establishing the strategic direction and growth goals of the healthcare business unit.  The Director will lead the team to meet sales, revenue, multiplier, and profitability goals as outlined in the annual and support regional growth.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

Team Management

  • Supervise Project Managers. Review and provide guidance on the execution of project work.  Ensure quality compliance and deliverables meet expected deadlines.
  • Foster a positive work environment and employee engagement through recognition activities and communications.
  • Review and provide guidance for structured mentoring programs and development plans to aid in the professional development of employees. The mentoring program and development plans are to be created and implemented by Project Managers, Senior Engineers, and the Learning & Development Lead.
  • Supervisory responsibilities carried out in accordance with Burns polices and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems of the Healthcare Project Managers.
  • Resolve issues that may arrise between an employee and manager.
  • Ensure team compliance with established accounting, human resources, risk management, etc. practices and activies.

Project Execution

  • Oversee the coordination of project work and resources across the team and across various offices. Facilitate weekly meetings to discuss project expectations, resources, and deliverables.
  • Ensure utilization goals are met and projects are properly staffed.
  • Understand of scope of work to ensure the adequate pricing of projects during the proposal phase and execution of the work.
  • Assist Project Managers in resolving escalated issues with the client, architect and/or contractors.
  • Monitor the progress of projects to ensure the timely submission of deliverables, the management of change orders, cost control procedures are in place, and the quality of project work.
  • Ensure Project Managers and Senior Engineers utilize established standards and adhere to the Burns quality compliance procedures and Burns Unique Client Experience processes.

Financial Management

  • Lead the team to meet sales, revenue, multiplier, and profitability goals as outlined in the annual and support regional growth.
  • Ensure written authorization and executed contracts have been received before starting work. Confirm contract terms and project scope are understood by Project Managers and Senior Engineers.
  • Meet or exceed utilization goals technical staff, project managers and yourself for the market segment group.
  • Forecasts operating costs of department and directs preparation of budget requests.
  • Meet or exceed multiplier and profitability goals set forth in the company’s annual operating budget.
  • Continuously monitor project budgets and manage work to remain within budget.
  • Provide accounting with guidance regarding invoice preparation and ensure invoices are prepared by 10th working day of the month.
  • Ensure the team’s timesheets and expense reports are submitted by the established timeline.
  • Attend monthly financial meetings with accounting group.
  • Responsible for meeting individual sales and revenue goals.

Client Relationship Management

  • Interact directly with healthcare facility owners, owner’s representatives, contractors, construction team managers, architects, and others.
  • Maintain a high-level relationship with clients, external partners, vendors, and contractors. Assist Project Managers in the resolution of arising or complex issues.
  • Periodically reach out to clients and prime contacts to ensure satisfaction with Burns’ work.

Business Development

  • Create annual business plan for the areas of responsibility.
  • Execute business development plans to attract potential clients to Burns and win projects.
  • Review and provide feedback to Project Managers and the Proposal team on all proposals, pricing, scope, and schedule.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's (B.S.) Engineering degree from an accredited university or college and minimum of 15+ years of experience in the Healthcare field focused on engineering and facilities design and/or the design and construction of a new healthcare facility.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience managing a team of Project Managers, Engineers and Designers.
  • PE strongly preferred.
  • Must have experience executing healthcare engineering projects with construction elements in excess of $1M.
  • Must have broad knowledge of all disciplines such as electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and medical gas, fire alarms, and fire suppression systems. Knowledge of lighting and technology systems preferred.
  • Must have strong knowledge of how healthcare systems and hospital’s function including decision making and proposal / procurement procedures.
  • Must have strong experience integrating and managing the clients, architects, and construction personnels’ expectations. Must be able to demonstrate the execution of conflict resolution strategies.
  • Must have experience in the engineering design and construction of patient care facilities specifically acute care hospitals, ambulatory care / outpatient surgical facilities, diagnostic and therapeutic centers, emergency care and trauma centers, intensive care units, labor and delivery units, laboratory facilities, medical imaging centers, operating suites, patient rooms, pharmacies, and/or medical offices and specialty buildings projects.
  • Must have engineering design and construction experience for back-up power systems, central plants and steam generation facilities, cogeneration combination heat and power plants, distributed generation and microgrids, electrical distribution infrastructure, standby generators, medium-voltage power, thermal distribution systems, HVAC, and/or sanitary wastewater projects
